Superstar Rajinikanth and director Nelson have teamed up for Jailer 2. Bankrolled by Sun Pictures, the film is a sequel to the hit 2023 movie.
Nelson had opened up about the sequel at an event in 2024. The makers officially announced the sequel with a video on the occasion of Pongal (January 14, 2025, Tuesday). In the video, Nelson and music composer Anirudh Ravichander are seen relaxing in Goa, even as a news bulletin mentions a cyclone heading steadfast towards Chennai.
In his trademark cheeky manner, Nelson talks about how since the release of his last film, five cyclones have gone by and Donald Trump has become the president of the US. Even as the two try to arrive at a solid idea for their next film, they are shocked to see a group of men brutally assaulted by a mysterious man.
The teaser slowly reveals that the attacker is none other than ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer with a dangerous reputation across the country. In the first part, a retired Muthuvel Pandian had swung into action when his son’s tryst with a mafia gang went awry. Anirudh will don the role of the music director for the movie while Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures is the producer.
Jailer, Nelson’s first collaboration with Rajinikanth, had hit the screens on August 10, 2023. The film, with memorable cameos from Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal, went on to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. Vinayakan played a fiery antagonist in the movie.
The film had an ensemble cast featuring Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah, Vasanth Ravi, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon and Sunil with cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Kishore and Makarand Deshpande.
Rajinikanth is currently shooting for Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie. Also starring Akkineni Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Sahir, the movie is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.
